Our Brief; Insutech Scotland was contracted to completely enclose the existing open balcony spaces as part of a project to improve the thermal insulation of seven T84 blocks in Summerston. The photographs show, the recent completion of the £1.2 million installation of our Rehau Polytec glazed screens at Cumlodden Drive. This Rehau Polytec glazed screening will also have a dramatic effect on the skyline. The main Contractor, ROK building, set a challenging programme of completing all 7 blocks of flats involving 28 no. seven / eight storey high screens, in just six months, which we are delighted to say has been achieved.
Technical Considerations; The client required a curtain wall system which could achieve –
- extremely high u-values meeting a BFRC A rating
- provide a certified 60 minute fire break between balconies,
- be recycled
- have little to Low maintenance with an expected lifetime of at least 35 year
- achieve an A rating on the BRE Green guide 2008; and
- meet extreme weather conditions as some blocks were 8 storeys high positioned on a hill, high above the Glasgow conurbation.
Solution; The Insutech Rehau Polytec 50 S curtain wall system and windows were chosen to enclose the open balconies primarily because of the enviable 0.9 W/m2K thermal performance, high weather performance, structural strength and simple sight lines. Each balcony has three tilt before turn windows and opaque spandrel panels to cover the old concrete balustrade, whilst internally, a simple PVC frame with matching finishes complete the façade.
